John Allen was transported on the General Hewett, departing 31st Jul 1813 and arriving 7th Feb 1814 with 301 passengers.
The Windham and General Hewett left England the 24th of August, in convoy with the Wansted, Capt. Moore, who sailed from hence last Thursday for Batavia; the General Hewett arrived at Rio the 17th of November, and sailed again the 2d of December. Together with the military detachments, she received on board for this Settlement 300 male prisoners, of whom we are sorry to report the death of 35, whose names we shall endeavour to procure an account of, and publish in the next Gazette, for the information of their friends and families in Great Britain. 27 Dec 1814. On list of prisoners to be sent to Newcastle per "Lady Nelson" By ship Gen. Hewet, Jno. Allen, Convicted by Crim Ct, Dec 21, sentence, 10 years. ------------------------------------------------------------- John Allen was next indicted, for having entered a dwelling-house on the evening of the 4th of May ultimo, and stolen therefrom two writing desks, one of which contained a promissory note of the value of 10ℓ. sterling ; 10 silver medals, value 3ℓ. and sundry other valuables ; also, a portmanteau containing a quantity of linen, value 20ℓ. and other property.—The prisoner, who was already under sentence of the law, was found guilty of the offence, which was aggravated by a breach of trust to his master, who was the prosecutor, and from whose service he had absconded a few weeks before he effected the robbery. —It appeared at the same time, that the prisoner had been in the Colony but a short time, and might not yet have had sufficient opportunity to weigh the advantages that await an honest demeanor, contrasted with those excesses that had tarnished him from the country of his nativity ; and to this humane consideration of his case he may doubtless have been indebted for the lenity of any sentence, short of death, which the Court might think fit to award against him. His life was spared ; but his offence required at the same time a serious punishment ; and he was therefore sentenced to be publicly whipped; to suffer six months in solitary confinement in Parramatta gaol, and be afterwards banished to Newcastle, there to remain at hard labour for the space of ten years.
