ADM 101/16/81824 Medical and surgical journal of the convict ship Chapman for 4 March to 31 July 1824 by James Hamilton, Surgeon and Superintendent, during which time the said ship was bound for Van Diemen's Land. Folio 11: John Alsop, aged 19, Convict; disease or hurt, fever, pain in his head and all his joints, feels some all over his body, pulse increased in strength and frequency, skin natural, bowels confined. Taken ill, 21 May 1824, at sea. Discharged 24 May 1824 [folio 12].

John Allsop was convicted at Devon, England on 17/03/1823 for burglary. 7yr transportation sentence. (Previous: served 2yrs at Bridewell & 1mth at Bodmin.) Transported on the 'Chapman', arriving in Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) on 27/07/1824. Aged 20yrs; b. Taunton; dark hair; brown eyes. Assignments and Port Arthur Penal settlement. Note on record that he was again convicted, as "John Oakley" in 1865.
