Convict Notes

In August 1861 it was reported that a police constable checking houses 'shut-up' in Inverleith Terrace discovered a house owned by a John FAED, RSA (residing in Fifeshire) had been broken into. Detectives Reilly, Gollan and McLevy undertook enquiries and the following day they found William Anderson ' nicknamed Boosey in a coffee shop in Canongate . . in the company of a John Cox who had not previously come to Police notice'. William Anderson was wearing a 'suit of clothes' stolen from Inverleith Terrace and John Cox had 'possession of a silver snuff box and gold rings' also stolen. Detective Reilly traced a 'portmanteau left in a hotel by John Cox with stolen clothes, a crowbar and bunch of keys'. The accused appeared at High Court of Justiciary - William Anderson received transportation for '21 years' (sic) and John Cox transportation for 8 years - see Scotsman newspaper 24 August 1861 p 2 on 'Housebreaking and Clever Detection'.
