Thomas Appleby was transported on the Surrey Or Surry, departing 9th Jan 1836 and arriving 17th May 1836 with 108 passengers.
Built at Harwich in 1811 a square-rigged transport ship of 443 tons and copper lined she had two decks with a height between decks of 5 ft. 8 ins. In 1818, she had a major refit increasing the decks (and convict carrying capacity) to three. She was owned by the London firm of F. & C.F. Mangles.

Thomas Appleby my 2nd great grandfather was born on 3rd Aug 1816, Manfield, Yorkshire, England. He was christened 26 Aug 1816, All Saints Parish Church, Manfield, North Yorkshire, England. He was the second of seven children of Elizabeth Wright & Richard Appleby. He was serving with the Army as a Clerk and Soldier in Carrickfergus,Anterim,Ireland. My great grandfather William Appleby (1856-1937) - Thomas & Elizabeth's nineth of thirteen children.

Thomas Appleby was born in County Durham, England in 1815. On 28/7/1835 he was sentenced in County Antrim to 7 years for stealing clothes - Listed as 20 years old. Assigned to James Wright at Lanyon Became overseer in charge of 20 men. 1840: TOL Queanbeyan. 8/9/1841: Married Elizabeth Bain – they had 12 children. They lived in the overseers cottage at Lanyon Homestead. C1841: Granted the license for the Fleece Inn at Booth’s “Flats. 23/5/1842: COF Later employed as a labourer, stockman, bushman, baker, hotelkeeper, he also operated a eucalyptus plant. 5/9/1901: Thomas died, aged 85 at Bermagui, NSW. Elizabeth died 18/6/1908 also at Bermagui, NSW.
