Alexander Arthur enlisted in the 62nd Wiltshire Regiment in 1873. In County Cork he volunteered for the NSW Corps in 1801. As a corporal, he sailed from Cork to Sydney aboard the ship Atlas, arriving 7 Jul 1802.
