SHIP NEWS.—On Wednesday arrived the Catherine transport, Capt. Simmonds, with 97 female prisoners from Ireland; which she received at Cork, and afterwards went to Falmouth for convoy, whence she sailed for this Colony the 8th of last December. Yesterday arrived the Three Bees transport, Capt. Wallace, with 209 male prisoners, also from Ireland, but last from England having sailed in the same convoy with the Catherine, under protection of the Niger and Tagus frigates; which captured, off the Cape de Verde, the Ceres French frigate, rated 36, but carrying 46 guns, after an action of 15 minutes in which the Tagus only was engaged. Family connections for Thomas (Atkins) are: ATKINS/AIKINS Thomas (Atkins/Aikins) was born about 1794 & became a general labourer. He was tried at Tipperary Ireland, sentenced to Life & arrived in NSW as a convict on 6 5 1814 after a voyage of 5months on THREE BEES; he was sent to Liverpool for distribution. On 9 2 1818 he was sent, as (Aickins), to Newcastle on ELIZABETH HENRIETTA. In November 1822 he absconded from Dr (Harris)s clearing party. In 1824 he was assigned to (Thomas)s road gang at Parramatta from which he absconded again in October 1824. From 1824-1825 (12months) he was at Mt Druitt. He had been issued his Ticket of Leave by 1838. He had his Ticket of Leave when given permission to marry about 1839. He married Mary (Rooney) about 1838. He was issued his Conditional Pardon on 26 1 1844. [Some details taken from this Website] Mary (Rooney) was born about 1810 in probably Wicklow county Ireland & became a house servant. She was tried for stealing money at Dublin city, sentenced to 7years & arrived in NSW as a convict, perhaps with a child, on 25 12 1837 after a voyage of 4.5months on SIR CHARLES FORBES. NSW Permissions to Marry. 1825-1851. Permission, Liverpool. Richard Aikins, per Three Bees, age 45, Life, T. of L., and, Mary Rooney, ship Sir Charles Forbes, age 28, 7 years, bond. Rev. R. Marum. This record is not dated, but Mary Rooney arrived 1837 in Sir Charles Forbes, aged 27, so it is probably 1837 or 1838.
