1837, 5 July: AYLWARD, James, 23, tried Co Carlow and found guilty of murder and sentenced to death. Death commuted to transportation for life (see Document ref1:TR 2, p10; Document ref2: CRF 1837 A35 at http://findingaids.nationalarchives.ie/). 1837, 15 August: James Aylward was admitted to Kilmainham Gaol, Dublin, from Carlow (prisoner #668). He was described as 23, 5'8" tall with blue eyes, brown hair and a fair complexion. 1837, 19 August: Discharged to be "embarked on the convict ship Neptune" (see Ireland, Prison Registers, 1790-1924; Dublin, Kilmainham 1815-1910).




William Magrath and Edward Aylward concocted a plan to murder Richard Magrath, the brother of William, the object was to get the brother's property. James Aylward, the son of Edward Aylward did not know of their intention to commit the deed until few minutes before the murder was committed. Both Magrath and Edward Aylward were hung. A respite for young Aylward, until 'further orders,' was forwarded from the Castle. Edward Aylward was about 60, a shoemaker and butcher, he had a wife, three daughters, and James. James Aylward was 21 years old on arrival. Native Place: County Carlow. James could read, was Roman Catholic, single, 5'8½" tall, pale freckled and pockpitted complexion, brown hair, grey eyes, diagonal scar over left eyebrow, mark of a burn inside of lower right arm, both little fingers a little contracted. 1846: TOL Parramatta.
