HMS Calcutta was the East Indiaman Warley (1795), converted to a Royal Navy ship. This ship of the line served for a time as an armed transport. She also transported convicts to Australia. The French Magnanime captured Calcutta in 1805. In 1809, after she ran aground during the Battle of the Basque Roads and her crew had abandoned her, a British boarding party burned her. In 1803 the Calcutta sailed into Port Phillip bay where at least 4 convicts escaped , in Sydney in April 1804 it was reported that 8 had died on the trip. Of the four known escapees one was shot on escape, 2 turned back after 2 days to reattach to the group at the camp in bay before the boat left , one continued on ...into Australia's history books. At least 13 convicts were transferred on to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania), Australia. The ship also carried officers, wives and free settlers.

Tasmanian Record: https://stors.tas.gov.au/CON22-1-1p55 Calcutta 1804, Ocean to VDL. George Bagley, Tried at Herefordshire G.D. 16 Mar 1802, Life . F.P. 24/8/39. 61- 3 Sessions, 7 years, 20 Dec 1825. ------------------------------------------------ SUPREME COURT. CRIMINAL SIDE, OCTOBER 1, 1825. George Bagley and Thomas Bellamy, were charged with stealing 240 lbs. Of pork from Mr. W. Cross, at Break Neck Hill, near the Coal River. On the 22d of March last, he had killed a pig, and hung it up in an outhouse, in which he himself slept during the warm season, in order to avoid the vermin in his own hut. His only servant, and old man, after seeing his master to bed, and fastening his door with a bit of stick, retired to rest in the original hut, about four yards distant. At midnight two men came and fastened the door, on the outside, and told him that if he ventured to force it open, they would blow his brains out. He, however, opened a small window, opposite the door of the place in which his master slept, when he saw two men pull out the pig which had been killed, and the two prisoners run up, on a whistle being given, and all four carried it off. - His master, a very infirm old man, of respectable appearance, originally an inhabitant of Norfolk Island, confirmed these facts. When he heard the noise, and asked who was there, he was ordered to bed, and threatened to have his head blown off, by a man who held a musket close to his face, saying they were bushrangers. The old man, who excited much commiseration, was unable to stand, or to speak loud enough to be heard, and the Attorney General repeated his evidence to the Court. "In as little time," said he, "as I could mention, I heard the pig cut down ; and, says I to myself, my pig is gone ! but I had some consolation that if they were bushrangers they would not carry it all off." They were, however, sawyers in the neighbourhood. Verdict guilty against both prisoners. Hobart Town Gazette, 8 Oct 1825. --------------------------------------------------- Supreme Court, Dec 20. The following is a list of the prisoners sentenced, with their sentences:— 7 years: George Bagley, Thomas Bellamy, …. Colonial Times, 23 Dec 1825.
