Transportation 10 Mar 1838 • New South Wales - - Cutilage Breaking - convicted with his uncle Daniel Betton b1790 - stealing fowl and wood




George was transported for breaking and entering and stealing along with his uncle Daniel Betton. Whilst Daniel was transported to Van Diemans Land, George's destination was New South Wales. George went on to gain a ticket of leave and a pardon 16 Mar 1846. Unfortunatley George was suspected of a second crime and on 23 Mar 1847 he was convicted of murdering a man named "Kelly" who was found dead by the side of a road. George was transported to Van Diemens Land on ship named Water Lily on the 12 Apr 1847. Sometime in 1848 George was transferred to Norfolk Island on the ship Water Lily and went on to gain his second conditional pardon 29 September 1857. George died in New South Wales in 1888.




George Betton was baptized 06/12/1812 at Wolstanton, Staffordshire – he was the son of Edward Betton/Ann Wade – and the cousin of Daniel Betton who was transported to VDL (for the same crime) per ‘Gilmore’1838. 1846: TOL 8/3/1852: Unclaimned letter at Geelong. No records on NSW BDM.
