Ralph was baptised 15th October 1797, son of Joseph and Mary Bevins. Ralph had married Jane Berkins in Shenton on 23rd October 1826. Wife Jane died in the Market Bosworth district in 1840. There were a lot of Bevins family members living in the scattered agricultural villages in the Bosworth and Hinckley area in the early C19th. Daughter Elizabeth seems to have been baptised in Newbold Verdon on 24th August 1828. Daughter Sarah seems to have been baptised in Barwell on 21st February 1832.

Founders and Survivor's have a birth date of 1802 and Ralph being 41 on arrival - (as birth dates are always approximate I think David Lea's date of 1797 would probably be right). Ralph was 5'1 1/4" tall, sallow complexion, dark brown hair, blue eyes, scar and mole on right cheek and on the eye, longer scar on chin, scar on left eyebrow, can read and write, widowed with 3 children, protestant. Brothers: John, William, Thomas, Joseph, at native place. Sisters: Mary at native place and Anne in America. Station of Gang: Maria Island. 20/1/1846: Emerged from Gang. 11/1/1848: TOL 2/1/1857: Free Certificate. 5/9/1854: Was a householder in New Town, Tas., (signed a petition to the Queen re appointment of the Chief Justice). No date of death found and no marriage.

Bevins jointly with a John Ball stole 46lbs of hay from the farm of Elizabeth Lea in Shenton, Leicestershire on 14th December 1843. He was convicted on 6th January 1844. (The Leicester Chronicle newspaper report calls him Bevans). Bevins told the court that he alone had committed the offence, in an attempt to get Ball off, but Ball's footprints were evidence. Ball got two months hard labour. Bevins got 7 years transportation because he had a previous criminal conviction.
