On Tuesday the 6 September 1859 Ellen Shirt the wife of John Shirt heard a noiseIwent to my front door and saw Abraham Binney coming out of his house he was in the act of putting his coat on and hearing the groans iwent into the house and found Hannah Binney lying at the bottom of the stairs she was partially dressed she was moaning very loudly ther was a pool of blood i called Sarah Swift a neighbour Hannah said her husband had hit her at the back of the head with some thing heavy idid not know the family all that well because they had only moved in the week before and they quarrelled every day and night by now they were people coming to the house and one nieghbour had taken the 2 youngest children out of the house Sarah Swift said he has killed you this time Hannah replied oh my lass he has the surgeon Mr Beaumont came shortly after 9 oclock Hannah kept saying that she was not a bad person like her husband had said she just wanted out of the house She got her son Samuel who was living in Sheldon street to come and remove a bed and a chair Hannah was taken to the Infirmary on examining they found 3 wounds 2 to the back of the head one on the fore head and one of the finger bones on the left hand was fractured trying to protect her self Mean while Abraham Binney went to the town hall and give himself up to police i hit my wife with a sand hammer which weights several pounds Abraham was cautioned until he made a statement which Abraham did after Detective Wm Leonard had visited the house and took statements from nieghbours back at the Town Hall Abraham Binney was asked to make a statement he said i was sorry for the trouble i have caused he said nothing about his wife Hannah Binney Abrahams trial was to take place in York where he found guilty of Manslughter and on 8 February 1862 he left england a board the SS Norwood a ship for convicts and arrived in Free mantle on the 9 june 1862 to serve his 7 years sentence Hannah was buried at ST Marys Church on Brammall Lane on the 25 September where they was a big turn out of people including her family and her children
