Walter Black was convicted for desertion from army (absent 8mths) at Chatham Court Martial on 13/07/1837. Previous offence for desertion. 7yr sentence. Transported to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) on the 'Moffatt' arriving 01/04/1838. Aged 30yrs; single; soldier; black hair; Hazel eyes; 5'7 1/2". Mark on left side - branded "D". Native Place of birth: Nottingham, England. Died at H.M. Colonial Hospital, Hobart in May 1839. Aged 30yrs.
