Convict Notes


Principal Superintendent of Convict Office, Sydney, January 17, 1844. THE undermentioned Prisoners having absconded from the individuals and employment set against their respective names, and some of them being at large with stolen Certificates and Tickets of Leave, all Constables and others are hereby required and commanded to use their utmost exertion in apprehending and lodging them in safe custody. Any person harbouring or employing any of the said Absentees, will be prosecuted as the law directs. The age of the prisoners is calculated up to the present time. J. M'LEAN, Principal Superintendent of Convicts Barritt James Punt, Mangles (8), 28, Essex, seaman, 5 feet 8 inches, dark sallow comp., brown hair, hazel eyes, small scar left corner of mouth, large scar below it, scar right elbow, anchor back of right hand, from Norfolk Island, since 2nd June, 1841. ... John Jones, 55 was found guilty of breaking and entering. He was sentenced to transportation - 15 years. Prisoner No. 6934. He was transported on "Nile" on or around 10 September, 1857.




Mr Graham LINES, historian has researched and written a book on James Punt BORRITT's life. JPB is one of only two known convicts to be transported three times. JPB was convicted and transported twice under that name and on a third occasion, under the name John JONES and sent to Fremantle WA.




James was aged 25 when transported for Burglary. He along with others broke into and entered the shop of Michael Henry Hart on the 15/6/1839 at St. Paul, Shadwell and stole clothing. At some point he was sent to Norfolk Island, from where he escaped and returned to England. In 1844 he was convicted for returning from transportation and transported for life per Hyderabad in 1844 to VDL. He was again sent to Norfolk Island for 2 years and then returned to VDL per Pestongee Bomangee in April 1847. Again he made his escape by stowing away amongst the cargo of a merchantman. 2/2/1852: Old Bailey - Arrested under the name of George Parker. Again convicted of returning from transportation, now aged 36 - Confined 6 months and then transported for life. 20/4/1853: He sent a petition to the Common Sargent, about all his escapes and hardships endured, as a plea for mercy. No other listing for his return.
