George's wife, Ann was initially assaulted by George on the 28th January 1839. Her inquest was conducted on 14th May 1839 at the Union Poor-House in Eling, Hampshire, where it suggests she died on the 12th May of that same year. George was sentenced for Manslaughter, and at the time he was already in the County Bridwell gaol serving time for another offence, a felony.




George Bromfield was convicted at Southampton 10 July 1839 for killing his wife. Previous offence for felony. 15yr transportation sentence - to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) on the 'Canton' 1840. Married - widowed. 5 children. Farm labourer. Stated he was going to strike one of the children when his wife tried to prevent him and he struck her. 2 yrs Probation in Colony. Assignments. 7 July 1846: Ticket of Leave




Marriage Permission request: 25 June 1849 to Catherine ALLENDER. (ref. 52/1/2). Married 13 Aug 1849 St. George's Church, Sorell district - however under name "Broomford". (Aged 33yrs, labourer). Catherine aged 20yrs, spinster.
