Mary Burke married William Buchanan (separate entry) at St Georges, Hobart on 19/7/1852. Mary Burke, born Mary Mitchell in Tipperary, Ireland, was a dairymaid who could not read or write. She was described as 5'1 1/2", pale complexion, medium head, flat visage, large forehead, black eyebrows, blue eyes, broad chin, large mouth, dark brown hair. She was sentenced to 7 years' transportation at Lancaster for having base coin in her possession and offering counterfeit coin, and arrived in Hobart Town on the St Vincent on 4/3/50. She was accompanied by her 10-year old son William. Mary's first husband, said to be William Burke, had been transported on the Kinnear in 1842. Mary married William Buchanan on 19/7/1852, and George was born on 10/6/1853, and Sarah at the beginning of Jan. 1856. Mary got her conditional pardon on 23/11/1853. We do not know her age. When sentenced in 1848 she was 37, when married in 1852 she was 30. When she died in 1874 she was said to be 56, so she was probably born between 1811 and 1822, and it is unknown when she moved to England. There were many Irish people in England at this time. In the 1841 Census there were 106,000 Irish in England, of which 34,000 were in Manchester and 50,000 in Liverpool. 1846 was the peak of the Potato Famine in Ireland, when many starved to death, and one of the few solutions would have been to leave Ireland to try to get work in England. She died at Goulburn St in 1874, a shoemaker's widow, of heart and pulmonary disease
