Francis Butcher was convicted in Auckland, New Zealand 3 March 1851 for Manslaughter - stabbing Francis McEwan of the 38th Regiment, in the Barracks (he lived 3/4 hr after the incident). Francis Butcher in the 38th Regiment 4 years.

Single man; aged 23yrs; 5’8”; tile maker; can read & write; Church of England.
Native place - Woodbridge
Transported to Van Diemen’s Land (Tasmania) per the ‘Antares’ arriving 29 May 1851.
Period of Probation 12 years.
Station Gang 1851 - Impression Bay.
1854: 1/4 of Probation Period to be remitted but conduct to be reported.
1855: 116 days remitted.
1856: unexpired period remitted.
1856 Hobart: absent. 2mths hard labour.
1856: a Constable at Hobart Barracks.
1857: Constable. Allowing a prisoner to escape. 8mths hard labour.
9 Mar 1858: Ticket of Leave granted.
5 Oct 1858: Ticket of Leave revoked because absent from Muster.
