LEICESTER ASSIZES. These assizes terminated yesterday, after the dispatch of an unprecedented quantity of business. Of the prisoners in the County Gaol, were condemned to death, and 9 of them are left for execution, including 7 Luddites. The two other prisoners left to suffer, are convicted of having, in company with several other persons, robbed the Walton carrier of sundry bank notes, &c.—The following are the particulars of the gaol delivery:- Condemned aged 32, William Withers, aged 33, William Towle, aged 22, John Amos, aged 30, John Crowder, aged 40, Joshua Mitchel, aged 29, James Watson, aged 21, and John Clarke, aged 28, for having, on the night of the 20th of June last, assembled with other persons at Loughborough in disturbance of the peace, and unlawfully demolished several laceframes, the property of John Heathcote and John Boden, in their factory there; and also for having then and there shot at, or been aiding and assisting in shooting at, John Asher, Eliz. Silvester, and Mrs. Rushworth, with intent to kill or do them some bodily harm. — Wm. Burton, aged 20, and John Blackburn, aged 22, charged with the same offence, were admitted evidence; Sam. Caldwell, aged 20, was remanded till the next assizes; and John Slater, aged 37, also for the same offence, was sentenced to be transported for life. Stamford Mercury, 4 April 1817. The seven were hanged in April.

Catherine Corderell or Welsh, age 39, F.S. Elizabeth 1818, 7years, catholic. Emily, 9, born in Colony. Samuel jun., 4, B.C. Anne, 10 months, B.c.




28/6/1816: Samuel was involved with a Luddite attack, one of the guards, John Asher, was shot and wounded. 1/4/1817: Placed on trial, Samuel collapsed suffering from convulsions, he was given tonics, but with no improvement he was held in prison until the next assizes. 30/7/1817: On trial for a second time. The charge for shooting at John Asher was dropped and Samuel pleaded guilty to frame breaking. He suffered another seizure. Sentenced to Life. Samuel was listed as 30 years old on arrival, 5'9½" tall, fair pale complexion, flaxen hair, grey eyes. Assigned to Capt. Eber Bunker, Liverpool. Colonial Secretary Index: CORDWILL, Samuel. Per "Neptune", 1818 1819 Jun 7,8: Re permission to marry at Parramatta (Reel 6006; 4/3500 p.145) 1822: Petition for mitigation of sentence (Fiche 3214; 4/1864 p.93) 28/6/1819: Married Catherine Walsh (Elizabeth 1818) Children: (The only child registered on the NSW BDM was Samuel in 1823 - unsure of other children). Emily 1819 Samuel 1823 Anne 1828 1822 Census: Samuel and Catherine had been assigned to a Mr Klensendorffe, Liverpool, they were listed as having two children, one three months old, the other 1½ years. 1825 Muster: Samuel was assigned to his wife and living in Liverpool. Oct. 1827: Catherine had a 30 acre farm in Botany and Samuel was still assigned to her. 1831: The family was living in Goulburn St, Sydney. 11/3/1833: TOL 1/10/1839: COF C1840s: Family moved to Newcastle, NSW. 29/10/1878: Samuel died of paralytis after 2 days of illness in Moonebah, Macleay River.
