Patrick Cane was tried at the Old Bailey on 16 June 1851, together with John Hickey and James McElliott, for the murder of Henry James Chaplen. Chaplen was a policeman, and the three defendants were causing a noisy disturbance, and assaulted the policeman and his colleague. Chaplen died from a blow on the head. Cane and Hickey were found guilty of manslaughter, and McElliott was acquitted. Cane was aged 40, Hickey, 23. They were sentenced to be transported for 15 years.
