We have further to announce the arrival on Sunday morning, the 29th instant, of the ship Almorah, with 180 male prisoners, all in excellent health, consequent upon their good treatment upon the passage; she lost not a man. — This vessel sailed from the Downs the 28th of April, arrived at Rio de Janeiro the 15th of June, and sailed on the 23rd; Sydney Gazette, 30 Aug 1817. Almorah 2. Yesterday arrived from Ireland,- the ship Almorah; Captain Winter. She sailed from the Cove of Cork the 22d of August last, and brings 160 male prisoners, all in good health. Surgeon Superintendent, Dr. Alexander, R. N. The guard consists of a party of 30 men belonging to the 1st Regiment of Foot (Royals), under orders of Ensign Bruce. Sydney Gazette, 23 Dec 1820. Almorah 3. On Friday last, arrrived from Ireland, with 108 female prisoners, the ship Almorah, Captain Boyd. She sailed from Cork the 6th of April; reached no where: and, independent of the female prisoners, brings 15 free women, and 50 children. One prisoner, and one child, died on the passage. Family connections for Eleanor (Carroll) are: CARROLL Eleanor/Ellen (Carroll) was born about 1803/5 & became a laundress. She was living at Kildare when tried at Maryborough (Port Laoise) Queens co. Ireland, sentenced to 7years & arrived in NSW as a convict on 20 8 1824 after a voyage of 4.5months on ALMORAH; she was apparantly sent to Parramatta Female Factory where she was not to be released until the ALMORAH had left Sydney. In October 1824 she was employed by Mr (Cordeaux). She married Edward (Fletcher) on 19/29 1 1827 at St Peters CofE Campbelltown & produced 2children. She died on 16 2 1857 age52. {Some details taken from this Website] Edward (Fletcher) was born on 8 3 1808 & baptised on 3 4 1808 at St Phillips CofE Parramatta. He was baptised again on 19 5 1811 age3 at St Lukes CofE Liverpool. He died on 19 11 1877 age69. On January 19th 1827, Eleanor married Edward Fletcher at Campbelltown, NSW. Edward had been born in the colony, the son of Edward Fletcher (Convict, Minorca, 1801) and Henrietta Langley [Born at capetown, on the First Fleet Voyage, the daughter of Philip Scriven (Seaman, died at Sea, Lady Penryhn, 1787) and Jane Langley (First Fleet Convict, Lady Penrhyn, 1788)] Eleanor and Edward had 8 children, born between 1827 and 1843.




Eleanor Carroll was single and described as 'sews, washer' and a native of Kildare. She was tried in 1823 at Maryborough (Port Laoise) Queens Co. and sentenced to seven years transportation. She was transported aboard the ship Almorah (3). She was described as age 19 on arrival.
