John Carroll was 34 and arrested in Liverpool England.  He had previously been convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to Life and transported on the Portland 1832.

John escaped the Colony in 1835, seems he was somewhat of an escape artist, having escaped from Bridewell (a prison), the hulk, the bullets fired at him left him unharmed, and then NSW.

John was a widower with 1 male son.  When arrested in Liverpool, he said he was looking for his son, whose mother had since died.

9/9/1841: John absconded once again from and escort to Bargo.
John was described as: 37 years old, a butcher and maltster, 5’7 1/2” tall, ruddy complexion, brown to grey hair, hazel grey eyes, diagonal scar below under lip, perpendicular and another scaron left side of same, many scars on the fingers of his hands.

I can find no records of him in the NSW Gv’t Records at all, so perhaps he died, or escaped again, also did’nt find him in VDL.

There were 2 John Carroll’s on this voyage, the other was tried at Cork and came from Cork and his are the only records I found.
