Jane CEFENDER was convicted at Chester, on 5 April 1823 for uttering forged notes. First offence. Life sentence. Transported to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the ship 'Brothers' arriving 1824. Single woman. 1827: in the service of Dr. Bromley. Absconded. Reprimanded and sent to the Female Factory. 30 Jul 1830: Application for permission to marry - to Samuel Coulson (free). Approved. 7 Feb 1831: Marriage to Samuel Coulson. (Registration is spelt "Cafender") at Hobart. (ref. 36/1/2 no. 1560) May 1831: Govt. permission for her to depart to Sydney, with her husband Coulson. 8 May 1831: Departed Hobart, with husband, per the 'Rifleman' for Sydney. (ref. CUS33/1/1 no. 340)




Jane marrie Samuel Coulson a free man. They departed Tasmania in 1831 for NSW. From 1846 Samuel owned hotels and from 1848 Jane owned hotels including the "Whitehaven Castle". Jane was born in Whitehaven, Cumberland, England
