Isaac COHEN was convicted at the CCC, London on 4 March 1844 for stealing a handkerchief from the person. Previously convicted of embezzlement and had spent time in prison. 10yr transportation sentence. Sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the 'Maria Somes' arriving 30 July 1844. Single man; aged 30 yrs; a tailor; 5'8 1/2"; can read & write; Jewish. Native place - Shoreditch, London. Father: Abraham Mother: Deborah Brothers: Samuel, Emanuel, Isiah, Benjamin & ..... Sisters: Rebecca, Sophia, Elizabeth & ..... (ref. source for family - Convict Indent Book) 18mths Probation Period in the Colony. First station gang - Maria Island (off the east coast of Tasmania). Several records of misconduct. Ticket of Leave granted 12 Mar 1850. Free Certificate 4 Mar 1854. 26 March 1862: Stealing boots. 12 mths hard labour.
