Murder of Margart Forane? aged 60 years old, she was beaten to death. husband murdered her but he brought witness, who was not there. Trade; Laundress & plain cook. Height; 5 ft inches ages 35 years Status; Married - 1 child 1849 - Marriage Permissions, 24 April 1849. Catherine Colgan per Ship; Waverley to John Frome per Ship; Lord Auckland - Refused Applied again; 10 Jul 1849 1849 - Delivered of an Illegitimate child named Joseph on the 4 June 1849 at the Cascade Factory. 1854 - 9 May. Ticket of Leave 1854 - Marriage Permissions. 11 April 1854 Catherine Colgan/Coolgan per Ship; Waverley Patrick Gargan/Gheogan - Free Woman must produce a credence of death of husband - 12 April 1854 Recommended 3 May 1854. Permission to marry John Frome (per 'Lord Auckland') requested 24 Apr 1849. Does not appear to have proceeded. Delivered of a male child named Joseph at the Cascades Female Factory, Hobart on 16 June 1849. (Father not named.) 1849: Not to enter service work south of Oatlands. Catherine Colgan was convicted at Kildare, Ireland on 19 March 1847 for murder - beating Margaret Foran (aged 60). Catherine stated that in fact it was her husband who committed the murder but he brought a witness in who said he was not there. Catherine was given a life sentence. Transported to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) on the ship 'Waverley' arriving 25 Oct 1847.
