The following letter was published in the Sydney Morning Herald, on 4 Nov 1939. "WATERLOOÂ KIT." The fact that there was a woman powder monkey at Trafalgar, cited by "S.M." on this page last week, was common knowledge to the pioneer colonists, many of whom had assisted in the scotching of the Napoleonic menace. It is of interest that, in addition, to this female powder monkey on the Victory, another woman rammed cannon on the field of Waterloo. The writer's grandmother, herself the daughter of a Waterloo campaigner, was born at Parramatta in 1822. She actually knew this militant, known by the sobriquet of Waterloo Kit,who had been sent to the colony in the early twenties. WaterlooKit, servant in the family of an English officer quartered near Brussels, took a day on to do her bit towards the downing of the little Corsican. She boasted proudly of blistered hands acquired in the process of loading heavy artillery, and even more proudly of the fact that she and the Trafalgar heroine had played men's parts in decisive battles. It is improbable that Waterloo Kithad personal acquaintance with the Trafalgar lady, but she certainly knew of her. Later Waterloo Kit and her husband crossed the mountains and settled at Orange, where they not only acquired a fine property but an honourable place in the community. JANE IMRIE.
