National Archives. Criminal Petitions. HO 17/38/152. Date. 1838 Nov 8. Prisoner name: Edward Cowell the younger. Prisoner age: 18 years. Prisoner occupation: Carpenter, of Leicester [Leicestershire]. Court and date of trial: Leicester Borough Sessions, July 1838. Crime: Housebreaking, and stealing a watch and a quantity of silver spoons from the house of John Pugh (schoolmaster) at Leicester. Initial sentence: Seven years transportation. Gaoler's report: 'Character bad, six times in prison on charges of felony'. Annotated (Outcome): 'Nil'. Petitioner(s): Edward Cowell the elder (father) of Belgrave Gate, Leicester. Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): His youth; he inclines towards imbecility; of a weakly and unhealthy constitution such that transportation will lead to his death; the prosecution witness was as guilty as he; his last apprentice-master is believed to have led him to the commission of evil; his father's long army service. Additional Information: Ordered to Justitia [convict hulk]. He has five uncles and or aunts similarly imbecilic. Petitioner served 21 years in the 69th Regiment of Foot [details given].
