SEQUENCE OF DANIEL KELLY'S CRIME AND PATH TO DEATH: (a) already a "notorious ruffian" before he commits the crime which got him transported. (1) CRIME - May 1808 - Stole a pocket book at Ballyclare, (County of Antrim). May have already been well known to law enforcement since ten months later he was reported in the press as being a “notorious ruffian”. (2) TRIAL - August 1808 - Sentenced Carrickfergus Summer Assizes to 7 years’ transportation. Belfast Newsletter 16 Augsut 1808 p.4 (3) ESCAPE - Between say Sept & December 1808 he escaped. Freeman's Journal 10th January 1809 newspaper report of his recapture said he had escaped at Dublin on his way to transportation. BUT an Irish government memorandum dated another year later, Feb 1810 (regarding his ulcerated leg) said he had escaped from Clonmel in Tipperary. (4) RECAPTURE - January 1809, report of recapture at Drogheda by a Peace Officer, (i.e. back north nearer area he came from) (Freemans Journal of Tuesday 10 January 1809). Was called “a notorious ruffian” in the press. This report said his escape had been at Dublin (5) ULCERATED LEG - Another year later, February 1810, he has still not been transported, and in the irish Prisoners’ Petitions is a memo from government saying he has an ulcerated leg which needs to be amputated. (6) - DEPARTURE - December1810 - departed fron Cork on “providence” (7) - DEATH 16 March 1811 - died at Sea of “fever after amputation of thigh”
REPORT OF ORIGINAL CRIME: Belfast Newsletter, 16 August 1808 page 4 "Carrickfergus Assizes ... Daniel Kelly, found guilty of stealing a pocket book in Ballyclare on the 24th May, was ordered to be transported for seven years."
Daniel Kelly was aged only 23 when he was put on board the providence convict sip at Cove in Nov 1810 to depart in December for NSW. * He had stolen a pocket book. (per prisoners' petitions) * Convicted at Carrickfergus Assizes in 1808 * transportation sentnce, for 7 years. * was imprisoned in Kilmainham Prison, Dublin (per prisoners' petitions) * 12 February 1810 MEMO stating that he had escaped from Clonmel Gaol County Tipperary one year previously and was apprehended in Drogheda, County LOuth. * Had an ulcerated leg which would have to be AMPUTATED. Presumably the leg was amputated before he was put on board the Providence in approx November 1810 and sailed in December 1810. * Daniel Kelly Died at Sea on 16th March 1811 of "fever after amputation of thigh". Per Public notice under Order of Governor Macquarie dated 27th July 1811 (Col Sec Records). Kelly must have had a dreadful voyage with his leg already amputated and with infection to set in, or already having done so, being the likely cause of "fever" that killed him.
