FOOTNOTE: Compiled from newspaper reports of the trial (including Glasgow Courier & Scottish Guardian, Glasgow): "John Dickson, charged with robbing, in so far as on the 24th February last, he attacked and assaulted George Glendinning Brown, salesman, and dragged him into a close in Crown Street, Hutchesontown, seized him by the throat, forced him against a wall and by force and violence robbed him a silver watch, chain and guard. It appeared from the evidence that the complainant was passing up Crown Street about one o’clock on the morning in question, when a female with a child in her arms accosted him and asked a trivial question. The young man had not answered the query when he was seized by the prisoner, who dragged him into a close. After grasping him by the throat, which he firmly compressed, he robbed him of his watch. The panel [accused] was sentenced to 15 years' transportation, Lord Cowan characterising the crime as a most daring act of street robbery." (https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/)
