James Doherty was 46 on arrival in NSW. He could not read or write. A Roman Catholic, he was married with 3 male and 3 female children, and his native place was Co Donegal. He had no previous convictions (see NSW Convict Indents, 1788-1842; Non-Annotated Printed Indentures 1838).


1837, 15 August: James Doherty was admitted to Kilmainham Gaol, Dublin, from Donegal (prisoner #670). He had been tried on 20 July 1837, convicted and sentenced to life for sheep stealing by Baron Pennefather. He was described as 48, 5’2½” tall with grey eyes, brown hair and a fresh complexion. 1837, 19 August: Discharged to be “embarked on the convict ship Neptune” (see Ireland, Prison Registers, 1790-1924; Dublin, Kilmainham 1815-1910).
