Convict Notes

Mary was born in Denbigh, Wales and was convicted of stealing a shawl and ring from George Smith at Liverpool at the age of 33. Mary was transported with an infant child, who was taken from her upon arrival in Tasmania and put into an orphans home while Mary was assigned to government work. It is unknown if Mary ever saw her child again. Mary was assigned to Huon Island to PG Armstrong, and was sentenced to hard labor along with not being allowed to enter service in the District of Hobart for being caught in an indecent position with a man on her masters premises and using an indecent expression towards her master's wife. It is on Huon Island that Mary met her future husband, fellow convict Thomas Baker. After three separate attempts of applying for marriage, Mary and Thomas were finally successful on the 11 August 1852. This union produced two sons.

Convict Indents state that Mary was 5'1/4 inches tall, had a long large chin and a broken nose, large mouth, black hair.
