10 May 1853: Application for permission to marry - to Honor GRIFFIN (transported per 'Lord Auckland'). ref. 52/1/6. 26 Nov 1853: Application for permission to marry - to Catherine ROWE (transported per Australasia). ref. 52/1/6. 28 Dec 1853: Marriage. William FARRER, aged 29yrs, bachelor, a sawyer to Catherine ROWE, aged 21yrs, spinster at St. Matthias Church of England & Ireland at Windermere, nr Launceston. (ref. 37/1/12 no. 1071) Children: 22 April 1855 - Benjamin FARRER. Father - William FARRER, labourer. Mother - Catherine FARRER, formerly Clarke. (Note: the informant for this information was a friend, so must have recorded the mother's maiden name incorrectly.) 14 June 1857: male child. Father - William FARRAR, a sawyer. Mother - Catherine FARRAR formerly ROWE. District of Launceston. (n.b. this surname is commonly spelt 'FARRAR' and there are several other convicts by that name.)




William FARRER was convicted at York, England on 11 Dec 1847 for selling counterfeit coins. Previous convictions. 7 yr transportation sentence. Sent to Van Diemen's Land per the 'Maria Somes' arriving 9 Aug 1850. Single man; aged 26yrs; 5'6 1/2" height; a clothier; sallow complexion; brown hair; Hazel eyes; can read & write; Protestant. Native place: near Bradford. Father: William Mother: Hannah Brother: Robert Sisters: Sarah and Harriett VDL: Issued with a Ticket of Leave upon arrival. 1852: At Launceston, fined for being drunk. 13 March 1857: Free Certificate issued, at Westbury. Further offences in the Colony, now named Tasmania: William FARRER-JOHNSON was again convicted on 8 June 1863 at Launceston for robbery. 3yrs imprisonment, with hard labour. 19 March 1875: at Westbury. Having meat in his possession. Fined. 9 Nov 1880: at Deloraine - Larceny. 3 mths imprisonment. Death: 14 Aug 1899 at Launceston, Tasmania. William FARRAR, aged 77yrs, heart disease, born England.
