James Foster was born in Sussex and arrived in Tasmania per Isabella on 21 May 1842. His convict records state that he was tried at Sussex on 22 March 1841. He received transportation for life for Burglary of money, wearing apparel and a watch from Mr. Holland, aged 23, single, protestant, cannot right or write. NP Horseman Hill, Sussex; father Thomas, has 4 brothers & 4 sisters. James Forster married Ann Griffin at Franklin Village Chapel on 24 June 1851. He was 30, widower, a ticket of leave convict and signed with his mark; she was 20, unmarried, a prisoner and signed her named. RGD37/1/10 no 642. Burglary at BEXHILL On 22 March 1841, James Foster “Dusty” was tried with Jonathan Tompsett (Acquitted), William Foster (6 months), Thomas Balcombe (Life-Isabella); James Martin (alias Stephen Marchant/Fuller “Uncle”(Life-Tortoise)); Henry Easton (alias Stubberfield) (Life-Tortoise); Charles Foster (Life-died on hulk). All Lifers were received onto Prison Hulk – YORK, moored at Gosport, on 9 April 1841.

Brothers: William transported in 1841 per Tortoise; Daniel to VDL in 1847 (ex Norfolk Island) and Charles died on prison hulk York in 1841. Parent were Thomas & Martha Foster of Herstmonceux, Sussex, England
