1844, 15 April: Granted a Ticket of Leave No.44/1186 for the District of Mudgee (see New South Wales, Australia, Tickets of Leave, Ticket of leave butts (NRS 12202); Ticket of leave butts, Feb 1844-Mar 1844, Mar 1844-May 1844).
James Gillespie was 21 on arrival in NSW. He could not read or write. A Roman Catholic, he was married and his native place was Co Donegal. He had no previous convictions (see NSW Convict Indents, 1788-1842; Non-Annotated Printed Indentures 1838).
1837, 15 August: James GILLESPIE was admitted to Kilmainham Gaol, Dublin, from Donegal (prisoner #673). He had been tried on 20 July 1837, convicted and sentenced to 7 years for receiving stolen goods [charge on Indents is shoplifting] by Baron Pennefather. He was described as 21, 5’6” tall with grey eyes, black hair and a dark complexion. 1837, 19 August: Discharged to be “embarked on the convict ship Neptune” (see Ireland, Prison Registers, 1790-1924; Dublin, Kilmainham 1815-1910).
