Thomas Green was transported on the Calcutta, departing 31st Jan 1803 and arriving 4th Oct 1803 with 305 passengers.
HMS Calcutta was the East Indiaman Warley (1795), converted to a Royal Navy ship. This ship of the line served for a time as an armed transport. She also transported convicts to Australia. The French Magnanime captured Calcutta in 1805. In 1809, after she ran aground during the Battle of the Basque Roads and her crew had abandoned her, a British boarding party burned her. In 1803 the Calcutta sailed into Port Phillip bay where at least 4 convicts escaped , in Sydney in April 1804 it was reported that 8 had died on the trip. Of the four known escapees one was shot on escape, 2 turned back after 2 days to reattach to the group at the camp in bay before the boat left , one continued on ...into Australia's history books. At least 13 convicts were transferred on to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania), Australia.The ship also carried officers, wives and free settlers.

Family connections for Thomas (Green) are: GREEN Thomas (Green) was born about 1785. He was tried for horse theft at Warwick Assizes on 23 3 1802, sentenced to death reprieved to Life & arrived at Port Phillip (now Victoria) as a convict on 4 10 1803 after a voyage of 7+months on HMS CALCUTTA also (an expedition that settled in Tasmania); he would have camped at what is now Sorrento/Sullivans Bay. This expedition rejected Port Phillip for a settlement at this time & he was moved to Risdon Derwent Van Diemens Land (Tasmania) on 27 1 1804 (arriving on 15/20 2 1804) on OCEAN or HMS LADY NELSON. He married Elizabeth (Fa/ulkner age14 her first marriage) on 13/30 10 1809 at St Davids CofE Hobart. He worked at Campbell Town before becoming a farmer on his wifes land grant. He was Free by Servitude by 1811. He died on 11 11 1812 age27. [Some details taken from this Website]. Elizabeth (Fa/ulkner) was born in 1795 in London. She arrived at Port Phillip (now Victoria) with her parents on 4 10 1803 after a voyage of 7+months on HMS CALCUTTAalso (an expedition that settled in Tasmania); she camped at what is now Sorrento/Sullivans Bay. This expedition rejected Port Phillip for a settlement at this time & she was moved with her parents to Risdon Derwent Van Diemens Land (Tasmania) on 27 1 1804 (arriving on 15 2 1804) on OCEAN or HMS LADY NELSON or leaving on 24 3 1804 (arriving on 25 6 1804) on OCEAN. She was granted land. She married secondly Richard (Lucas) on 15 8 1815/13 1 1816 at St Davids CofE Hobart & produced 3/9children. She produced 5/11 children in her lifetime. Thomas (Green) & Elizabeth (Fa/u/wlkner) produced 2children 1.Thomas (Green) was born in 1810. 3of his children were apparantly adopted by his uncle John Pascoe (Faulkner). 2.Sarah Eliza (Green) was born in October 1811 & baptised on 12 11 1812 age13m at St Davids CofE Hobart. She died on 10 4 1813 age16m & was buried at at St Davids CofE Hobart. Life. ------------------------------------------------------- The Assizes for this county ended at Warwick on Thursday, when fentence of death was passed on the following twenty prisoners, viz. ... and T. Green, for horse stealing ; ... Green, and ... are reprieved, and the nine others left for execution. Aris’s Birmingham Gazette, 5 Apr 1802.




Thomas Green was landed at Port Phillip, when the settlement there failed he arrived in VDL on 20/2/1804. 13/10/1809: Married by banns at Hobart, Tasmania, to Elizabeth Fawkner 1795-1851 (daughter of convict John Faulkner 1770-1854, who was also on board, and Hannah Pascoe 1774-7/3/1825). Children: Thomas Green 1810- Sarah Eliza Green 1812-1813 Thomas worked at Campbell Town and when Elizabeth was granted land, he took up farming. 11/11/1812: Thomas Green died at Hobart - he was 27 years old (which would make his birth date 1785). Elizabeth then married Richard Lucas, a settler from Norfolk Island, at Hobart on 15/8/1815 - they had 9 children.
