Convicted of Theft aggravated by opening lockfast places and by previous conviction at the High Court of Justiciary at Edinburgh, Scotland, 03 February 1851. Then aged 21 years and by trade a Labourer. Sentence: 7 years' transportation. Licence granted: 17 May 1854, for early release from Warrior hulk prison [moored at Woolwich]. TRIAL: 23 June 1856: National Records of Scotland -- Reference JC26/1856/366 Trial papers relating to William Morrison and John Carfrae Hogg for the crime of theft by opening lockfast places at Juniper Green, Colinton, Edinburghshire. Tried at High Court, Edinburgh. Accused: William Morrison, married, Verdict: Guilty, Verdict Comments: Guilty in terms of own confession - theft, Sentence: Imprisonment - 9 months. Note: Pannel pleaded guilty as libelled, with the exception of the aggravation of opening lockfast places. Pannel cannot write. Pannel to serve sentence in the prison of Edinburgh. Accused: John Carfrae Hogg, Verdict: Guilty, Verdict Comments: Guilty in terms of own confession, Sentence: Transportation - 14 years. Previous convictions: theft - High Court of Justiciary, Edinburgh, 3 February 1851, under the name of John Hogg. [Note: He was sentenced to transportation for 7 years in 1851 for "theft by housebreaking and opening lockfast places" at two locations in Edinburgh. At his sentencing, it was noted that he had a previous conviction for theft by housebreaking, handed down by Edinburgh police court on 14 February, 1846.] --00--
