Per Ship: Henry, April 1823, New South Wales. --------------------------------------------------------------- Yesterday morning, Samuel Maxwell, Robert Muir, James Donnelly, Alexander Hamilton, and David Watt, arrived here from Glasgow, in order for trial, on Monday next, the four former for the crime of stouthrief and robbery, by means of housebreaking; the latter for perjury. Caledonian Mercury, 9 Dec 1820. Stouthrief or stouthreif is the Scottish crime of use or threat of violence against a householder who defends themselves during a housebreaking; it is additional to any associated robbery.  Wikipedia. HIGH COURT OF JUSTICIARY' ,EDINBURGH. Yesterday se'nnight, Samuel Maxwell, Robert Muir, James Donelly, and Alexander Hamilton, were put to the bar, charged with having, on the 13th November, broken, into the house of Mr. Arneil  at West Caplay, in the parish of Neilston, near Paisley, and stolen therefrom a gold watch, nine £1 notes, some silver, copper, and various articles of wearing apparel. The robbery was proved by Mr. and Mrs. Arneil and two female servants, but the principal witnesses against the prisoners were, a Miss M'Williams, and James Dolin, an accomplice. Miss McWilliams proved that the pannels, with some others, called at her mother's house, and obtained a sword.  Dolin disclosed the particulars of the whole transaction. He and six associates procured a sword from Mrs. McWilliams, and one of the party had a pistol. When they reached Arneil's house, they caused the door to be opened, six of them rushed in and elected the robbery, and one remained outside and kept watch. The Jury found S. Maxwell and A. Hamilton Guilty, and Not proven against Robt. Muir and Jas. Donelly. Hamilton was recommended to mercy. Maxwell and Hamilton were sentenced to be executed the 17th January.   Star, 19 Dec 1820.
