Robert Hamilton, indicted for stealing flax, the property of Wm. Derragh, at Belfast, on 24th April last. John Clamsie knows Wm. Derragh.; he had flax in witness’s yard, that he had bought from witness ; was awoke by the watchmen .4 o’clock in the morning ; they had person in custody who had a quantity of flax in his arms; believes prisoner to the man, but not sure, as it was hardly dawn; flax the watchman had, corresponded with what was taken out of one of the mats in witness’s yard. George Todd watchman, and took prisoner into custody in Mr. Cramsie’s gateway, with the flax in his possession, between four and five in the morning; prisoner pushed the wicket gate against witness; witness knew prisoner to be an old offender. Guilty; to be transported 7 years. The culprit thanked his Lordship, and said it was well was anwen. Belfast Commercial Chronicle, 11 Aug 1827.
