Court and date of trial: Glasgow Circuit Court of Justiciary, 17 September 1822. Crime: Attempting to ravish a girl under the age of 12 years. Initial sentence: Public whipping and transportation for life. Petitioner(s): Elizabeth Hand (the convict's wife). Grounds for clemency: Petitioner and her son are now in wretched poverty and dependent upon charity; the convict's transportation will leave her and her son desolate and forlorn. Additional Information: The petition is not for mitigation of sentence but pleads that the convict's wife and her son may accompany the convict into exile. John Hand (their son), aged six years, is the sole survivor of their four children.
