On Thursday arrived the Ship Rolla, Captain John Cummings, from Ireland, with Prisoners of both sexes, viz. 119 Men and 37 Women: Seven of whom died on the passage; and the day after her arrival landed some of those who were weakly, at the General Hospital. She left Ireland the 4th of November, arrived at Rio de Janeiro on the 15th of January, sailed from thence the 6th of February, and in 95 days after came to an anchor in Port Jackson. During the latter part of the passage she experienced much bad weather; in the course of which, she sprung her main?mast and carried away her main?yard. She brings, for the use of Government, 234 pieces of Pork, 686 Casks of Flour, and 11 Tons of Sugar. Sydney Gazette, 15 May 1803.

Anne-Maree Whitaker in “Armagh Convicts in Australia, 1800-1806” gives the following details: Patrick Hand, tried August 1801, in Armagh. Census 1806, - Government prisoner, Parramatta; 1814, (Windsor, free, landholder). 1811, Nil.

Patrick leased a small farm at Cornwallis. He managed in the 1806 flood, but was washed out in the 1809 flood and so moved to higher ground at Richmond. 28/7/1810: COF Marriage to Catherine Hatch not registered on the NSW BDM - both were devout Catholics and with the absence of priests, marriages performed by 'heretic' clergymen was unrecognised. Children: 1812: Patrick 1812: Catherine 1813: Elizabeth Acquitted of the shooting of Isaac Cornwell, his plea was self defence. Finding it difficult to manage on 15 acres, Patrick worked extra jobs, carting rice from Parramatta and helping the Benevolent Society. 1820: fined for having government stores in his possession, unable to pay, he was gaoled. 1/11/1822: was awarded a land grant, of 50 acres in the District of Sutton, County of Argyle. 3/2/1825: Catherine died in childbirth. 1825 Census: Hand, Patrick, free by servitude, Rolla, 1803, 7 years, landholder at Richmond Family of Patrick Hand of Liverpool: Hand, Catherine, 14, born in the colony Hand, Patrick, 14, born in the colony Hand, Elizabeth 13, born in the colony Hand, Mary, 11, born in the colony Hand, John, 9, born in the colony Hand, Charles, 3, born in the colony Other Children: 1808-1808: Elizabeth 1824: James 15/12/1827: Patrick Hand died, aged, 50, and was buried with Catherine in the churchyard of St. Peter's Anglican Church, Richmond, Hawkesbury (stated on his headstone that he was buried by Catholics). His two young sons were fostered by local farmers.
