Thomas's partner, Elizabeth Lee, WAS NOT the Elizabeth Lee who partnered Private Lewis on Norfolk Island. That Elizabeth Lee arrived with the First Fleet. Also, Thomas's correct name is Eather, not Heather. In 1816, the Government issued a Public Notice naming 116 persons who claimed "in the late Muster" to be living free, but could not verify their claim. One of the 116 was "Thomas Eager or Heather, Neptune, Hawksbury, Landholder". (See the Sydney Gazette and NSW Advertiser, 23 November 1816.) It would seem that Thomas, who had been free by Servitude since 1802, was a victim of a mis-transcription into the Muster, likely due to illegibility. This error probably not only led to his wrongful inclusion in the 116 named persons, but also to him being incorrectly named as Heather in transportation lists. He was convicted as Eather, land grants were made to him as Eather, his children were baptised as Eathers, and his partner (wife?) Elizabeth Lee went by Eather. I can find no evidence that he ever, himself, used the name Heather.

After arriving in the colony Thomas started living with Elizabeth Lee (Convict, Mary Ann, 1791). They raised a family of 8. By 1818 he, Elizabeth and family, lived in a five roomed house in George Street Windsor (The site now occupied by the Coles supermarket). He petitioned the governor for additional land because not all his family were provided for. By 1822 he had 21 acres, 4 cattle, 50 hogs and 30 bushels of grain. He died March 23 1827 aged 62. Elizabeth survived him by a further 33 years.
