William Hempenstal was transported on the Surrey Or Surry, departing 14th Jul 1816 and arriving 20th Dec 1816 with 150 passengers.

Built at Harwich in 1811 a square-rigged transport ship of 443 tons and copper lined she had two decks with a height between decks of 5 ft. 8 ins. In 1818, she had a major refit increasing the decks (and convict carrying capacity) to three. She was owned by the London firm of F. & C.F. Mangles.

Per "Surrey", 1816 1820 Jul 27 On list of prisoners transported to Newcastle per "Princess Charlotte" (Reel 6007; 4/3502 p.146) 1823 Sep 15 On list of convicts removed from Newcastle to Port Macquarie per "Mermaid" (Reel 6019; 4/3864 pp.422-3) 1825 Dec 24 Prisoner at Port Macquarie. Sent on board "Mary Elizabeth" as crewman (Reel 6069; 4/1816 pp.537-9) -------------------------------------------------- Absconded. Peter Pearson and William Hempenstall, from the Road Parties. Sydney Gazette, 14 Aug 1819. William Hempenstall and Samuel Bayley were indicted for a highway robbery and feloniously taken from the person of Corporal Allen, a silver watch, his property. Both Guilty. Remanded for judgment. Sydney Gazette, 24 June 1820. CRIMINAL COURT. on Thursday, the 6th instant, the various prisoners that had been convicted during the session received sentence as follow, William Hempenstall and Samuel Bailey, stealing a watch - 14 years to Newcastle ; Sydney Gazette, 15 Jul 1820. Colonial Secretary's Office, 24th June, 1834. CERTIFICATES OF FREEDOM. The undermentioned Persons have obtained Certificates of Freedom since last publication: Surry (2), William Hempenstall. Sydney Gazette, 28 Jun 1834. House-Breaking and Robbery. - On the night of Monday last the stores of Mr. Daniel Egan, in: George-street, were broken into and robbed by a fellow named William Hempenstall, who was apprehended in York-street, with a bag of sugar on his back. This man was employed about the stores, and succeeded by some means or other in forcing open the door and one of the windows. The prisoner was remanded for further examination.
