William Hempenstal was transported on the Surrey Or Surry, departing 14th Jul 1816 and arriving 20th Dec 1816 with 150 passengers.
Built at Harwich in 1811 a square-rigged transport ship of 443 tons and copper lined she had two decks with a height between decks of 5 ft. 8 ins. In 1818, she had a major refit increasing the decks (and convict carrying capacity) to three. She was owned by the London firm of F. & C.F. Mangles.

Per "Surrey", 1816 1820 Jul 27 On list of prisoners transported to Newcastle per "Princess Charlotte" (Reel 6007; 4/3502 p.146) 1823 Sep 15 On list of convicts removed from Newcastle to Port Macquarie per "Mermaid" (Reel 6019; 4/3864 pp.422-3) 1825 Dec 24 Prisoner at Port Macquarie. CRIMINAL COURT. on Thursday, the 6th instant, the various prisoners that had been convicted during the session received sentence as follow, William Hempenstall and Samuel Bailey, stealing a watch - 14 years to Newcastle ; Sydney Gazette, 15 Jul 1820. House-Breaking and Robbery. - On the night of Monday last the stores of Mr. Daniel Egan, in: George-street, were broken into and robbed by a fellow named William Hempenstall, who was apprehended in York-street, with a bag of sugar on his back. This man was employed about the stores, and succeeded by some means or other in forcing open the door and one of the windows. The prisoner was remanded for further examination.
