_______________ The Thomas Halcup who died at Parramatta in 1882 was recorded as being 35 years of age so could not be Convict Thomas. He could be his son though, born about 1847. The 1882-deceased Thomas Halcup is likey to be this person, who was locked up in 1875 for being insane: The Cumberland Mercury, 24 April 1875 p.2 "Thomas Halcup was brought up for protection. Constable Woodcroft deposed: 'From information received, I arrested prisoner on the Sydney Road, on Thursday the 22nd inst., and charged him on suspicion with being of unsound mind; from his manner and appearance. I believed him to be of unsound mind. I brought him to the station and looked him up.' "Dr. Rutter and Dr. Waugh deposed to examining prisoner, and gave as their opinion based on such examination, that prisoner was of unsound mind, and a dangerous lunatic, and not fit to be at large. "They d/L stated that some time back he was an inmate of the Parramatta Benevolent Asylum, from which he had lately escaped, and that he was subject to fits of epilepsy which appeared to be hereditary in the family. It being quite evident that prisoner was insane, the Bench ordered him to be sent to the receiving house at Darlinghurst, there to be dealt with in the due course of law." At the Darlinghurst Receiving House, persons were taken before a Magistrates Bench to determine whether they should be committed under Schedule 2 of the Lunacy Act. If he was found to be insane, Thomas Halcup was probably sent again to the Parramatta Asylum for the Insane.
