Richard Hutchinson was transported on the Indefatigable And Minstrel, departing 9th May 1812 and arriving 19th Oct 1812 with 331 passengers.
The Indefatigable was built at Whitby, England. She was square-rigged three masted ship of 549 tons and had three decks; a length of 127 ft. and a beam of 31ft. 8ins. The Indefatigable sailed from England on 4th June 1812 in company with the Minstrel. The Indefatigable came direct to Hobart, VDL arriving there on 19 October 1812. One prisoner died on the voyage out. Having disembarked the prisoners in Hobart, the Indefatigable arrived in Port Jackson on 6 December 1812, departing there bound for England in January 1813. Correction: William Coventry arrived per 'Hercules' 1802.
York Herald North Yorkshire, England 17 Aug 1811 York Lammas Assizes, 1811 His Lordship passed sentence of Death Upon the following: Richard Hutchinson and Wm. Bayley, for horse- stealing. Richard arrived per 'Indefatigable' 12/4/1817: Richard aged 31 married Bridget Burne (Byrne) (Alexander 1815/16) – she was 23. Two daughters listed. By 1824 Richard had a TOL (exact date not found) 9/5/1829 Hobart Town Courier: Richard Hutchinson, was convicted of stealing one bullock, value 41. the property of Charles Minze. No further outcome of the sentence published in the newspapers, but he must have been sent to Macauarie Harbour. 1/1/1831 Hobart Town Courier: Richard Hutchinson, 5 feet 8, brown hair, grey eyes, aged 46, a labourer tried at York in 1811. Sentence life, per Indefatigable, native of Lancashire, small scar on chin, absconded from Macquarie harbour. Sep.3, 1830. Reward £2 In 1830 five men absconded from Macquarie Harbour, Richard Hutchinson, William Coventry per ‘Atlas’ 1829, Edward Broughton per ‘Earl St. Vincent’ 1826, Patrick Fagan (no ship found – no Patrick Fagan arriving before 1831 on records) and Matthew McAvoy/McAlboy per ‘Castle Forbes’ 1820. Richard Hutchinson was killed by Broughton, he was cut up and eaten by the others because they were starving, Fagan next struck William Coventry, did not kill him and so he was finished off by Broughton and McAvoy, and he was eaten as well. McAvoy next killed Fagan, he being young and foolish, so that he would not tell what had been done. They eventually gave themselves up and confessed to everything – they were both executed on 5/8/1831.
