Medina 1823. Surgeon’s Journal states: 27 August 1823; Received on board 180 male prisoners. 2: 5 September 1823; Got under way from the Cove of Cork and made all sail for ultimate destination. Two days before our departure 3 of the convicts were taken away in consequence of orders, and it was intended to have replaced them by others, but our short stay would not admit of it. The remaining convicts were 177. One convict died at sea. SHIP NEWS.—On Monday evening last arrived from the Cove of Cork, which she left on the 5th of September, with 176 male convicts, the ship Medina, Captain Brown. The guard comprises a detachment of the 40th, under orders of Lieutenant Gunning. Assistant Surgeon Coleman, 40th Regiment, comes by this opportunity The Surgeon Superintendent is Dr. Rodmell, R N. who was here before in the Mary transport. Sydney Gazette, 1 Jan 1824.

RUNAWAY NOTICES THE undermentioned Convicts having absconded from the Prisoners' Barracks, Hobart Town, and here being every reason to believe that they have piratically carried off the sloop Ellen belonging to Harris Walker, Esq of Pittwater, all Constables and others, are hereby required to use their utmost exertions to apprehend and lodge them, in, safe Custody, and the usual Reward will be paid for their apprehension. [The band of 12 convicts escaped from the Hobart prisoner barracks, stole a boat and set off down the Derwent. Near the mouth of the river, they seized the cutter Ellen. The crew had taken to their boat, abandoning the cutter when they saw the armed convicts approaching. Neither the Ellen nor any of the convicts were seen or heard of again. – Chris Ison.]

JAMES NELSON was indicted for stealing, on the 19th of January , a coat, value 2 l.; a waistcoat, value 10 s.; a pair of trowsers, value 1 l.; a hat, value 12 s.; a pair of boots, value 2 s.; a pair of gloves, value 6 d.; two handkerchiefs, value 1 s.; a comb, value 1 d.: a key, value 1 d.; a half sovereign, and half a crown, the property of David Reid , in the dwelling-house of Alexander Thompson . DAVID REID . I lodge in the dwelling-house of Alexander Thompson , who lives in Cecil-court, St. Martin's-lane ; the prisoner came to lodge there on the 15th of January, and slept in the next room to me; the articles stated in the indictment, with half a sovereign and half a crown, were in my bed-room - the whole was worth more than 5 l. - it was all safe on the night of the 19th. I went to bed between nine and ten o'clock, and on awaking in the morning it was all gone, and the prisoner also. I have only found my boots, comb, and key. ALEXANDER THOMPSON . I live in Cecil-court, in the parish of St. Martin in the Fields , and rent the house; Reid lodged there; and the prisoner came on the 16th of January, in a destitute state, stating that he had been laying about the streets three or four nights, and I put him in sleep in the room adjoining Reid's; he slept there till the 19th, and on that morning he was missing. I saw him in custody on the Thursday following. JOHN BIRCHALL . I am a constable. I apprehended the prisoner at Charing-cross, on the 22d of January. I found a comb and two keys on him, and a pair of boots on his feet; he said he was glad that he was taken, for he wanted to go out of the country. DAVID REID . The comb, boots, and keys are mine. Prisoner's Defence. I have been for sixteen years in his Majesty's 21st Regiment, or Royal Fusileers , and after coming home set up in business at Edinburgh, was unfortunate, and got a recommendation for the Caledonian Society, but could not get two subscribers to sign it. I was destitute of every thing. GUILTY - DEATH . Aged 39.
