National Archives. Criminal Petitions. HO 17/6/60 1823 Jan Prisoner name: James Robertson and Robert Simpson. Court and date of trial: High Court of Justiciary, Edinburgh, 10 January 1823. Crime: Robbery. On 14 September 1822 at Church Street, Inverness from Angus Fraser (porter at the Caledonian Coach Office, Inverness) a trunk and various articles as listed in the indictment, the property of William Cameron of Rothiemurchus, Inverness, also from John Fraser (apprentice shoemaker) a bag containing a quantity of wearing apparel and other articles, the property of Dr Herbert Taylor of Uttoxeter, Staffordshire. Initial sentence: Death. Day of execution 21 February 1823 at Inverness. Petitioner(s): Hamilton Pyper, defence counsel. Grounds for clemency: Recommended to mercy by the jury. Other papers: Favourable report on the case by D Boyle, Lord Justice Clerk. Letter from Simon Fraser Mackintosh, the convicts' agent, transmitting the petition from Pyper to the Home Department. Letter from Duncan Chisholm, circuit agent, requesting that no time be lost in forwarding a respite. Additional Information: Tried with William McTaggart, a soldier, against whom the charge was found not proven.
