William (Jenkins) was born about 1762 and came to Australia as a convict in 1788 on CHARLOTTE. He was sentenced in 1786 to 7years transportation at Exeter w/2others for assaulting a person at Plymouth with sticks intending to rob & conveyed to hulk DUNKIRK, where his behaviour was reported as tolerably decent & orderly. In 1787 he was transferred to ship CHARLOTTE. He is recorded on victualling list in Sydney in 1788. He married Isabella (Chapman) at St Phillips Sydney in 1791 & maybe produced 4children (can find no mention of these). In this year he was granted 30acres at Bulanaming which he had developed by 1802 2.5acres wheat 10acres ready for maize 7bushells wheat, 10bushells maize produced. Along with his wife off stores he now had 1child on stores. In August 1802 he conveyed 'Jenkins Farm' at Bulanaming to Robert (Campbell) for 70lb. In 1806 he was renting 60acres all in grain from Henry (Kable) Hawkesbury 6female hogs 6bushells wheat & maize. There were 5persons here off stores (himself, child. & 3freemen - no wife. He later married Catherine (???/Robertson/Robinson/Stewart convict from SYDNEY COVE 1807) at St Phillips Sydney in 1810 when he was 48yo & produced James (Jenkins) b.1812 bap.1819 & Susannah (Jenkins). In 1828 William (Jenkins) age61 was farming 20acres at Portland Head with 7sown in grain and owning 24cattle was listed as having arrived in 1788 and living with a wife Catherine, but his ship was given as ALEXANDER, probably a clerical error. More confusion about the ship of arrival occurred when the burial of William (Jenkins), farmer at Portland Head aged 70, was recorded on 29th January 1837, said this time to have come by FRIENDSHIP (another clerical error or the result of vague family recollection). The details of the occupation, age and location seem to fit the First Fleeter. There is also confusion as to his age. Isabella (Chapman) has an entry on this Website. Katharine (Robertson alias Stewart) has an entry on this Website.
