Convict Notes
SPECIFIC CRIME OF THEFT of SADDLES: Limerick Chronicle of 8 Sept 1810 - “Denis SHEEHAN, John SHEEHAN, Roger SHEEHY, and Jos. DONOGHUE, for stealing saddles etc from the Stables of the Rev Mr Bruce, to be transported for 7 years.” This was likely to have been an agrarian-activity as it was a group stealing the saddles and horse-related equipment as that was a common practice when agrarian groups went out at night attacking a property. This seems more especially likely given the victim is a Magistrate. The charge has been framed as theft only.
John Sheehan aged 36 yrs on arrival in NSW 2 July 1811 per 'Providence' sailing from Cork, Ireland. Advised Governor's Secretary on board on arrival that he was aged 36, and that he was convicted at County Cork Assizes on 29 August 1810, Given 7 years transportation. (See note by Campbell attached to Indent for Providence, Col Sec Correspondence) FJ of 7 Sept 1810: "County of CORK, Convictions in the County Court" .... "Denis Sheehan, JOHN SHEEHAN, Roger Sheahy and Joseph Donohue, GRAND LARCENY, to be transported for seven years." * 2 July 1811 arrived in NSW * 24 November 1811, at Richmond, DIED. Buried 26 November 1811 by Rev Robert Cartwright. Registered at St Matthew's Richmond.
