JAILS: 25 August, 1852: Committed at Newcastle Upon Tyne to stand trial; held there until and following his trial on 20 October. --0--

NEWSPAPER REPORT OF THE TRIAL: From the Newcastle Journal, Saturday 23 October 1852, p7: "JOHN WILSON (17), and JAMES JONES (19), were charged with stealing a purse containing £1/1s. the monies of Thomas Smith, on the ... of August. The wife of the prosecutor [Catherine Smith] was proceeding up the Side on the evening of Tuesday the ... of August, when four men on the street pushed against her, and, immediately after feeling a hand in her pocket, she saw her purse in the hand of Wilson, who gave it to Jones. The thieves immediately made off, she followed, never once losing sight of them, and they were captured at some little distance. The frequent occasions on which they had been before the magistrates warranting the inference that they were incorrigible thieves, the sentence passed upon them was that of transportation for ten years."
