On 6 & 7 March 1848 serious 'Chartist' riots took place in Glasgow with three persons killed, four serious injured and many shops plundered. Police arrested 200 persons but only 18 persons convicted at several trials the Glasgow Circuit High Court. On Wednesday 3 May 1848, five accused - George Smith, John Crossan, Hugh Barrons, James Killin and Peter Keenan (all aged between 18 to 25 years) appeared - charged with mobbing & rioting and 32 theft/robberies at several shops (the indictment extending to 73 pages). The five accused were found guilty of mobbing & riot in some other charges - with sentences passed on Friday 5 May 1848. Although the newspaper account reported Peter Keenan received 2 years imprisonment, but appear erroneous for he was transported for 10 years - see Scotsman newspapers 6 May 1848 p 3 on 'Glasgow Justiciary Spring Circuit' and 10 May 1848 p 3 on 'Glasgow Spring Circuit' for 5 May 1848 sentences.
