Convict Notes

KILDARE ASSIZES. ATHY, JULY 25. Thomas Killeen was indicted for a rape, on Elizabeth Cuffe, a girl about 15 years old. Sir Jonas Green, K.C., examined the prosecutrix. It appeared in evidence, that the girl was brought from the Foundling Hospital, in in Dublin, and apprenticed to a farmer named Smyth ; that one evening, in the month of August last, Smyth sent the prisoner (who is a married man, and has a large family) to dig some potatoes in an adjoining field ; that the girl accompanied him for the purpose of picking the potatoes, and that against her will and consent the prisoner perpetrated the crime for which he there stood indicted. The trial occupied a considerable time; but the details are unfit for publication. Verdict—Guilty. Lord Plunkett addressed the prisoner in a pathetic manner. He told him that the crime had been most distinctly proved ; that it was unpalliated by even one redeeming circumstance, the prosecutrix being an orphan, and he having stood in the relative situation of husband and father. The crime brought down on him the heaviest punishment of the law, and that punishment he must be prepared be prepared to meet. He then sentenced him to be hanged, without having fixed a day for carrying the sentence into effect. English Chronicle, 2 Aug 1827.
